A Growing Partnership!

It was smiles all round when local charity Manor Farm CA met Arthur Patton of Grasmere Garden Centre in Burntwood. The generous folk at Grasmere kindly donated a wide range of seed potatoes and other seasonal vegetables to kick-start planting the Silver Scheme allotment in Walsall.

Growing fresh fruit and vegetables will soon be shared by older people with a little time on their hands with the fruits of their labour shared between senior citizens across the borough.

‘We cannot thank Arthur enough,’ said project co-ordinator Diana Southall. ‘It just goes to show the people at Grasmere Garden Centre care as much about their older customers as they do about horticulture. Through their generous donation, our growing season can really take off!’

David Smith, lead gardener for the 'GrowZone' Silver Scheme Allotment Group, said
'WE have a lovely allotment and now the seeds and vegetables to plant.  With the gifts from Grasmere we can pass on real skills and advice to others who have green fingers - as well as those who simply want to enjoy the fresh air, peace and tranquility that our Walsall allotment will provide.’

The plants and seeds provided by Grasmere Garden Centre in Lichfield Road, Burntwood is all of the finest home-grown quality and will provide the perfect start to a successful vegetable patch. Owner Arthur Patton said, ‘When we found out the valuable work undertaken by Manor Farm we were only too pleased to be of help. Gardening and growing your own produce is so rewarding – healthy exercise, fresh air and the finest fruit and vegetables for your table. What could be better?  Older people seem to know what is good for them and they won’t be disappointed with their growing efforts down on the Manor Farm allotment!’

The newly dug allotment is near Rushall in Walsall and anyone who can spare time, seeds or tools is invited to support the Silver Scheme ‘Growzone’ project at Manor Farm and ... get stuck in!
